In 2017 I have presented a varied program that has introduced our audiences to a group of very talented young performers who are already making a name for themselves at major concerts, in State symphony orchestras, in music broadcasting and teaching. As well as standard repertoire from some of the  major composers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, we have been treated to recitals introducing South American composers such as Astor Piazzolla, Sergio Assad, Maximo Diego Pujol, and Jose Bragato. A wonderful piano recital By Tamara Anna Cislowska explored Australian composers from the early twentieth century to later works by Elana Kats-Chernin and Peter Sculthorpe.  This concert in July honoured the much loved local music teacher and promoter of gallery concerts, Margaret Brooke. Many thanks to all the performers listed here, some of whom travelled from interstate to perform in our town. All have commented on the beautiful setting at the gallery that allows chamber music to be played to intimate audiences as was originally intended. May: Ziggy and Miles Johnson, two young classical guitarists with a passion for South American composers. June: Kristian Chong (piano) and Sophie Rowell (violin) played Beethoven, Mozart and Stravinsky. Who can forget the impassioned playing of Sophie when she brought the audience to a standing ovation with her interpretation of gypsy airs. August: Catherine Fraser (violin)  and Trent Arkleysmith (guitar) showed that Scottish fiddle music is popular with a much wider audience than the Scots. October: The Quartz String Quartet Played a challenging and marvellous concert of Robert Schumann and Bedrich Smetana. The Melbourne Recital Centre was treated to this very program two days later. November: Stewart Kelly (piano) and Rebecca Proietto (cello) finished the year’s program with Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. And for good measure, a finale by Jose Bragato. Shortly discussions will start with the Melbourne Recital Centre about the possibilities for the 2018 Program. This year we changed the starting time of the concerts late in the season. We will have to review starting times before 2018 after discussions with the Gallery. As soon as a program is finalised, we will broadcast it on  the MusicBenalla website. Special Thanks to the Melbourne Recital Centre and the RACV who have provided financial sponsorship for these regional concerts. Their generosity has enabled us to keep ticket prices affordable. Sarah Wade at the Melbourne Recital Centre has provided invaluable assistance in suggesting artists and making contact with them.  Particular thanks to our Gallery Director Bryony Nainsby who has welcomed the music program into the gallery and to her staff who have assisted with setting up the performance spaces, printing and ticket sales. As you all know the Gallery is very short of all types of space and storage. It has continued to support the music program despite this, with our hope that some time in the future Benalla may be able to support a sizeable extension to the existing building. This will enable an even broader range of exhibitions, cultural activities, workshops, lectures and the music program to continue to develop and provide a cultural hub for the town. Thanks to the Friends of the Gallery who have provided wine and refreshments for each concert which has increased the conviviality and enjoyment for all of us. Lastly but not least, a big big “thank you” to you, our audiences. Without you the concert series could not happen. Meg Dillon Music Program Convenor for “Friends of the Gallery”
